Isobel Bolton
Business & Administration Apprentice
I began my apprenticeship with Plymouth City Council and OCSW as an opportunity to learn and give back to the city that I relocated to 4 years ago. I have been supported from the very start through OCSW’s proactive and personal approach to learning. My tutor has made me feel valued by taking the time to visit me at my office and ensured that I am confident in my role as an employee so that I can complete apprenticeship and study tasks to the best of my ability. One of the challenges I have faced was learning terms and abbreviations within adult social care as this felt like a new language to me! I overcame this by creating what I call my OneNote ‘cheat sheet’ where I tracked terms, processes and queries. My apprenticeship has developed both my personal and professional lives by providing financial stability whilst facilitating a change in career path and clarifying my career ambitions while adjusting my skills to a business setting. My advice to everyone considering an apprenticeship with OCSW whatever the subject, stay curious, ask questions and trust in their support as they are there to guide you along the way.

Michael Burt
GCSE Maths
Hello everyone, my name is Michael Burt, a 76 year old widower, who returned to learning with OCSW 3 years ago and I am presently taking my 4th course, GCSE Foundation Maths.
I have found my association with OCSW to be a rich and rewarding one, not only to keep my mind active but also socially. I have met a number of really nice fellow students and tutors who have really added to the new path that I have taken and have given me much encouragement.
My main challenge to returning to a classroom environment after so many years was my age. In all my courses, I have been the oldest student, but I have found my Integration with the younger generation to be easier than I thought it would be and I have thrived in their company.
To anyone thinking of starting a course with OCSW I say go for it, it has been so beneficial for me and has shown that even age is no barrier to further learning. The tuition is excellent and first class support is always available.

Digital Marketing for SME's
Feeling inspired after attending the Digital Marketing for SME’s course with On Course South West. A big thank you to Clint, our tutor who made learning fun and easy and the 2 hours flew by! The Thursday evening sessions were so useful and I learned a ton about growing Butterflies & Roses online. It was a small relaxed class of similar minded people and Clint took us through each class in an easy to follow, and interesting way. Big thanks also to Sam and the fantastic team at St Budeaux Library for being such a great community space. Now, time to put all this new knowledge into action to help Butterflies and Roses grow!

Angel Grimes
Supported Internship
Before joining OCSW, Angel recognised a significant gap in her life: a lack of formal education and professional skills needed to secure stable employment. This in turn contributed to a prolonged period of social isolation and a sense of being stuck in a personal rut. Angel knew that improving her social skills would help her to make new friends.
Angel's experience at OCSW proved to be "beyond helpful." She found the level of support from the work coaches and teachers exceptional. Crucially, the staff demonstrated remarkable patience and adaptability, explaining questions in another way when needed to ensure she understood. The atmosphere was noted as "very welcoming," creating a safe and encouraging space where she felt comfortable addressing her struggles and receiving the best possible assistance.
Angel's learning experience at OCSW has helped her to become more self aware. Beyond gaining practical skills, she experienced a significant period of self-discovery, gaining "more insight into her own head." This clarity helped her identify her personal strengths, weaknesses, preferences, and long-term interests.
Most importantly, Angel's social goals were met with success.😊 The course provided the necessary environment to develop social skills, leading to new friendships and a successful escape from isolation.
