Beyond the Canals: How 14 Days in Venice Transformed Our Learners

When you think of Venice, images of winding canals, historic bridges and gondolas immediately spring to mind. For our group of our Personal and Social Development (PSD) learners, a recent two-week Turing Scheme placement in the "Floating City" was far more than a getaway, it was an unforgettable opportunity to build confidence, make friends, and experience a whole new culture.

Learning didn't happen behind a desk, it happened right in the heart of Venice! Daily walking language lessons with the Easy Italian Language School turned the city streets into our classroom. The group were quickly put to the test, practicing their Italian through interactive games, dynamic conversations and spontaneous singing. It was an unexpected twist, but one that broke the ice and brought the group together.

The cultural immersion was hands-on every step of the way. The group rolled up their sleeves for authentic pasta and tiramisu-making workshops, mastering traditional recipes from scratch. They also explored Venice's iconic surrounding islands: discovering the vibrant colorful houses of Burano, watching master glassblowers on Murano and enjoying the seaside atmosphere of the Lido. The adventure also took us further afield, with memorable day trips to Lake Garda for a scenic boat trip and a day exploring beautiful Verona.

Venice offered an inspiring backdrop for creative expression. Guided by Maggie from the On Course team, learners tried their hand at traditional Venetian mask-making and relaxed watercolour painting sessions, capturing the city's unique charm.

Because every learner brings their own interests to the program, there was plenty of room to explore. While everyone stood in awe at classic landmarks like the Bridge of Sighs, individuals got to follow their own passions, discovering world-class art galleries, grand museums and hidden historic spots that looked like they were taken straight out of a storybook.

Navigating a floating city means stepping out of your comfort zone daily, whether that’s hopping on and off water taxis, taking ferries across the lagoon, or using a new language. But the mental and emotional growth was the true highlight of the placement.
