Your Future - pilot programme

This month a group of four SEND and care experienced learners aged 19 to 22 took part in the On Course South West pilot programme, Your Future.

With four weeks of learning they gained valuable qualifications and skills to equip them to transition into independent adulthood.

This included designing a menu for a week of self-catering, shopping and budgeting. This was a true test of communication and collaboration as the group had a variety of dietary requirements that they needed to be mindful of. They showed real empathy and understanding of one another’s needs.

This included buying in excess of 30 bananas for one of the participants who was an avid gym goer!

The group settled in really well into the accommodation, a self-contained facility on the edge of Dartmoor for the first part of the week and then onto an activity centre in Cornwall. Everyone joined in with the activities which included archery, kayaking, raft building, climbing, quarry steering and camp fires. The group also got involved in the cooking and cleaning. For one learner it was the first time putting the kettle on for a hot drink.

One of the learner’s mums commented “I never thought Jack would do this and stay the week. I am so proud of him”.

Jane Hunt, Senior Economic Development Officer said

“The pilot was a great success. We really hope to secure additional funding so that this programme will become a key component of the Short Breaks Innovation Fund”.
