OCSW Turing: A Journey of Discovery in Krakow

A group of 12 dedicated learners from our Supported Internship programme, aged 18-25, embarked on an international residential trip to Krakow, Poland.  The Turing Scheme is all about changing lives through global opportunities, and for this cohort, the focus was specifically designed to complement the Supported Internship programme; to develop independence, by navigating a foreign city and managing daily routines abroad; to experience new skills with hands on workshops and learn about the history of Poland; and to build lasting friendships and peer support networks within the group to thrive both in life and future employment.

Building Independence from Day One

The journey began with a significant milestone for many, travelling abroad for the first time or without the attendance from parents / guardians / carers. However, by the time they touched down at Krakow Airport, the group were already demonstrating a heightened sense of responsibility.

Cultural Immersion and Hands-on Learning

Krakow offers a rich tapestry of history and culture, and being situated near the Vistula River provided the perfect opportunity for exploration.

One particular highlight of the trip was venturing deep into the Wieliczka Salt Mine.  We trekked 137 metres below ground, learning about the history of the salt mine and seeing some stunning sights along our journey.

We visited the Rynek Underground Museum, explored the Jewish quarters Kazimierz and Pódgorze, as well as ventured past the dragon of Wawel Cathedral and Castle, the learners engaged with Poland’s past, gaining a broader understanding.

The interns participated in the traditional art of making and tasting Obwarzanek (Polish bread) and a professional chocolate making workshop, focusing on following complex instructions and sensory precision.

This was all balanced with leisurely activities, from shopping in Galeria Krakowska, the largest shopping centre in Krakow; relaxing on a boat trip along the Vistula River; and visiting the Jagiellonian University Botanical Garden, soaking up some very welcome sunshine!

Friendships and Future Horizons

Whilst the sights were spectacular, the most beautiful part of the trip was witnessing the growth of the group. The Supported Intern programme is built on the foundation of community, and seeing these 12 individuals support one another, forming deep friendships and a strong peer network was truly inspiring.

Each intern returned to Plymouth not just with souvenirs, but with a newfound confidence. They have proven that they can navigate the world with independence, a skill that will be invaluable as they continue their journey toward employment.

Poland was more than just a trip; it was a milestone on their path to a bright and autonomous future.
